Transwoman journalist attacked online

Description

Kaye Brier, a writer for Inquirer.net, became the target of online attacks involving gender discrimination and vile accusations in October 8, 2024 calling out a troll account actively participating in election discourse in Negros Oriental.

The attacks were led by Peter Carter, an anonymous Facebook account notorious for targeting critics of the Tanjay Administration. The anonymous Facebook account specifically attacked Brier's gender identity as a transwoman after she criticized one of Facebook posts under the Peter Carter account concerning the Tanjay Water District project, which falsely alleged that certain media members had been bribed. In a separate post by Peter Carter, Brier was accused of being involved in selling drugs.

Brier noticed that the anonymous Peter Carter account has a consistent prominence of pro-administration content in its posts. Considering the political climate in the city, she feared for her life by this online harassment and intimidation and remarked how it is a manifestation of the troll accounts usage to advance political agenda now that the election season is nearing.

In her recent public post via X (formerly Twitter), Brier said she continues to stand in defiance against these attacks.
