Publisher of SY TV Arbitrarily Arrested by Poipet Military Police

Description

On May 15, 2025, the publisher of Srotob Yuvakvey News (SY TV) was reportedly arrested without explanation by three military police officers in Poipet, Banteay Meanchey province.
Speaking to CamboJA, the journalist said he was apprehended around 3:00 p.m. at a PTT gas station in Poipet town and taken to the Poipet Military Police Station. He stated that no reason was given at the time of the arrest, but during his detention, officers informed him that the action was based on an order from the Banteay Meanchey Provincial Court prosecutor. According to the officers, the arrest was related to news content that allegedly damaged the reputation of a high-ranking official.
Although authorities did not specify which report triggered the arrest, the journalist suspects it was linked to a leaked audio clip he had published on SY TV’s Facebook page earlier that day. The recording allegedly captured one journalist threatening another, claiming that a "high-ranking official" was displeased with a particular report and that legal action would follow.
The journalist said he was held for approximately three hours and released around 5:30 p.m. after signing a written agreement. The contract included a letter of apology admitting wrongdoing, a recorded voice message acknowledging his mistake, and a thumbprint confirming his agreement to stop publishing content that could harm the official’s reputation and to refrain from spreading false information.
