Police charge 2 reporters with obstructing law enforcement

Description

On 15 March 2023, two reporters for Wartani, a news agency that extensively reports on the separatist violence and conducts of the security forces in Thailand's southern border provinces, were charged with obstructing law enforcement officials for their roles in the livestreaming of a confrontation between local residents and security officers on 21 February 2023 in Yala province. Police accuse the pair of interfering with police operations and inciting unrest in their broadcast, a charge denied by the reporters. Their lawyer said the allegation is meant to discourage members of the press from reporting or broadcasting the reality on the ground in the restive Deep South.
