Government upholds restrictive law of the communications and multimedia act
1 September, The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has emphasized that its actions against irresponsible media outlets are aimed at ensuring responsible information dissemination and preventing the spread of slander and misinformation. The MCMC operates under the provisions of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 (CMA 1998) and has a key national policy objective of protecting Malaysians from online harm, including misinformation and hate speech, while safeguarding democratic institutions and respecting constitutional monarchs. The MCMC also works to prevent the misuse of online platforms for offenses under Malaysian law and engages with media organizations to address concerns related to freedom of expression and combat misinformation.
