Description

On the 1st of February 2024, Independente Newspaper, Diligente Online no Neon Metin.info’s journalists were banned from covering news stories on a dialogue between PM Xanana and local residents of Naktuka at the border zone of Timor-Leste and Indonesia. The dialog was about the land border dispute between Timor-Leste and Indonesia.
On the 1st of February, the day on which PM Xanana and his negotiation team had a dialog with the local residents of Naktuka, the security authorities prohibited three media outlets’ journalists from covering the event. The security officers only allowed journalists from the media that were officially invited to cover the dialog. Those journalists were also offered per diem to cover the event at the border zone of Oecusse.
These three media’s journalists were prohibited from covering the dialog because on previous days the journalists from the referred three media covered stories from the residents living at the border zone who will lose their soils if the result of the negotiation is not in favour of them. The Government and its alliance also accused these three media of doing propaganda and spreading fake news.
However in reality, those three media’s journalists covered news stories on the residents living at the border zone regarding the land border dispute between Timor-Leste and Indonesia because according to the widespread information, the Government of Timor-Leste will give the land of Naktuka to Indonesia, therefore these three media wanted to confirm and verify it by interviewing the local residents living at the border zone. Those three media were facilitated by a national NGO called Rede Ba Rai (Land Network) by providing them with preliminary data and information on the local residents’ corn and rice fields that are being part of the border dispute. On the basis of this, journalists of these three media tried to make a confirmation with the Government because it affects the residents, especially women living in the area. Unfortunately, the journalists from those media were not allowed by Secretary of State for Social Communication, Expedito Dias Ximenes to confirm it with PM Xanana and his negotiation team.
