Foreign news broadcasts about the Thai election blocked

Description

On 30 May 2023, reports emerged that TrueVisions, a major satellite and cable TV provider in Thailand, appears to have blocked various news segments and interviews about the 14 May 2023 election aired by at least 5 news agencies: BBC, CNN, Al Jazeera, NHK, and ABC Australia. News broadcasts related to the election were immediately replaced by the message "Program will resume shortly," leading some of the journalists working at the news stations to take to social media and demand explanation. TrueVisions did not provide any reason for the interruption, though back in 2020 it publicly announced its hiring of "censorship staff" to monitor and censor foreign news broadcasts on what it deemed to be sensitive political subjects.
