Description
On 15 May 2023, a well known transparency activist and writer said she received a court warrant informing her that she has been sued by Gulf Energy Development, one of Thailand's largest power producers. The company accused the activist of defamation through her online posts, in which she criticized Gulf for its alleged monopoly over the country's energy enterprises, and demanded 100 million baht in damages. Gulf has also filed similar charges against six other known individuals, including a magazine editor and politicians, in a move that many rights watchdogs decry as yet another example of strategic lawsuits against public participation, or SLAPP.
