Citizen journalist charged with royal insult and jailed

Description

On 3 March 2023, a 55-year-old citizen journalist who often broadcasted protests and rallies on his Facebook page was arrested by the police on the charge of royal defamation, known as lese majeste. The Facebooker is accused of singing a parody song that insults the monarchy during his livestreaming of the 28 July 2022 protest in front of the Bangkok Southern Criminal Court in support of activists jailed for lese majeste charges. He was later denied bail by the court and sent to prison, making him the 236th known individual to be prosecuted for lese majeste since a protest demanding reforms of monarchy broke out in late 2020.
