Wanting to Cover the Trial, Female Journalists in Jayapura City Are Harassed
Journalist for the Cenderawasih Post Newspaper named Elfira Halifah was verbally abused by a man who was sat at the front of Jayapura District Court. At that day, Elfira covered the trial of the indictment against West Papua National Committee (KNPB) spokesperson Viktor Yeimo, on Monday, 21 February 2022, around 10.00 Eastern Indonesian Time (WIT), at the Jayapura District Court at Papua.
At that time, Elfira was about to enter the courtroom, then a man wearing a hat looked to Journalist and said, “I will rape you later” using Papuan dialect accent.
A man was sitting in the front yard of the Jayapura district court, with a group men. The man is suspected of being a member of the accused Victor Yeimo, who couldn’t enter to the courtroom.
AJI Jayapura accompanies the journalist to recovered from his trauma, and urges the journalist not to cover at the District Court for the time being.
AJI Jayapura with Elvira has attempted to report this case to the police. However, due to a lack of video evidence, and no witnesses around the area of crime, the police could not follow up on this report.
