Army accuses northern news agency of sedition

Description

On 29 June 2023, the 33rd Army District -- the Royal Thai Army's northern command -- filed criminal complaints against Lanner, a local news agency that extensively covers politics and social issues in the northern region, on charges of sedition and cybercrime. The charges were related to a demonstration by a group of activists in Chiang Mai province on 24 June 2023 to commemorate the 91st anniversary of Thai parliamentary democracy and demand greater administrative autonomy for the region. However, army officials said the demonstration, which was livestreamed by Lanner, showed an intent to sow sedition among the populace, and brought legal actions against the organizers as well as Lanner, for broadcasting the event.
